Pallet racking in Newport, built for the M4 corridor, the docks and the steel trade.

Newport sits where the M4 leaves Wales for the Severn crossings, and its warehouses work to that geography: logistics units at St Modwen Park Newport near junction 23A and Imperial Park at junction 28, steel stockholders around the docks, and trade and light industrial units on Queensway Meadows and Leeway.

We survey, design, install and inspect racking across the city, from two tier coil cradles beside the River Usk to locker and shelving rooms that serve the compound semiconductor fabs around Newport. Surveys are booked within five working days of your call.

Newport's warehouse map runs along the M4 and down to the Usk.

Most storage in Newport falls into three belts. The first follows the M4, and its anchor is St Modwen Park Newport, formerly Celtic Business Park, about 2 miles from junction 23A. It offers around 460,000 sq ft of logistics and industrial space and has hosted an Amazon delivery station since 2016. At the other end of the city, Imperial Park off junction 28 mixes warehousing, production and trade units. These sheds run long shifts, turn pallets fast and tend to want adjustable pallet racking, narrow aisle layouts and pick faces that can be reconfigured when a contract changes.

The second belt is the docks. Associated British Ports describes Newport as the UK's largest steel handling port, moving around 2 million tonnes of steel in 2024, and the stockholders, slitters and fabricators around Alexandra Dock and the Southern Distributor Road store coil, plate, bar and section that a standard beam level cannot hold. Cradles, cantilever arms and heavy duty frames do the work here.

The third is the established industrial land on the east side of the Usk. Steelmaking at Llanwern ended in 2001, and the former works is being redeveloped as Glan Llyn, with St Modwen Park on its 100 acre business land and further plots still to come. Closer to the city centre, Queensway Meadows and Leeway hold older light industrial and trade counter units that mix engineering, building supplies, motor factors and regional distribution.

  • St Modwen Park Newport (formerly Celtic Business Park)

Modern logistics and industrial units on the former Llanwern steelworks land near junction 23A, storing palletised parcels, retail and manufactured goods.

  • Imperial Park, junction 28

Industrial, production and distribution units on the western edge, holding mixed pallets, components and finished stock.

  • Newport Docks and Alexandra Dock

Steel coil, plate and long product handled by stockholders and processors next to the quays.

  • Queensway Meadows

Light industrial and trade counter units holding mixed pallets, sheet material and spares.

  • Leeway and Maesglas

Older industrial estates close to the city centre, with trade, engineering and small distribution units reworking their storage.

Pallet racking and storage we fit most often in Newport.

The list below is ordered by what Newport sites actually ask us for. Steel and heavy long product rank higher here than in most Welsh towns because of the docks, and inspections rank high because so many M4 sheds run around the clock.

Racking safety duties for Newport operators running nights and weekends.

Under PUWER 1998, racking is work equipment, and HSG76 expects every warehouse to name an appointed person responsible for racking safety. In a Newport parcel or retail depot that runs three shifts, that person cannot be on site for all of them, so the system has to work without them: recorded visual checks at shift handover, a clear way for drivers to report a strike, and a named deputy on nights who can offload and isolate a bay.

Once a year, an independent SEMA Approved Rack Inspector should carry out an expert inspection and leave a written report. On a dockside steel site, we pay particular attention to cradle and cantilever arm condition, base plates in yards where heavy loads are set down hard, and whether load notices still match the grades being stocked. For semiconductor suppliers, we fit inspections around cleanroom shutdown windows. Pallet Racking Services Wales works to SEMA codes of practice and our installers are SEIRS registered.

Newport's steel, semiconductor and M4 trade each need a different store.

Few places in Wales put three such different storage problems within five miles. At the docks, steel arrives by ship and leaves by lorry, and the stock is heavy, round or long. Along the M4, the problem is volume and speed: pallets in and out against tight delivery windows to England. Around the city, the compound semiconductor cluster, which the Welsh Government describes as the world's first, runs fabs and equipment plants that need clean, disciplined storage for spares and consumables away from the cleanroom itself.

We plan each one from the load, not the floor area. A coil store starts with the heaviest coil and the truck that lifts it. A distribution shed starts with pallet count, pick rate and aisle width for the trucks you run, for example 2.7 to 3.2m for reach trucks or 1.6 to 1.9m for guided VNA. A cleanroom support store starts with what each shift needs to find in under a minute, and how it is kept clean.

Getting to Newport from Seven Sisters.

Our base at Seven Sisters is about 50 miles from Newport. The route is down the Dulais valley to the M4 at Neath, then east past Cardiff to junction 28 for Imperial Park and the docks. For sites east of the Usk, such as St Modwen Park off junction 23A, the run continues through the Brynglas tunnels, where congestion can add time. That is normally around 70 minutes, so we plan early arrivals to miss the morning queue.

Surveys are booked within five working days. Installation crews stay local for multi day jobs, which lets us work evenings, weekends and bank holidays when a Newport depot cannot stop trading in the week. Inspections at sites that run nights can start after the last trunk departs, and dockside work is scheduled around vessel discharge and crane time.

A Newport coil store moved off the floor.

A typical job here is a steel processor near the docks storing coil on the floor against timber chocks, single tier, with coil edges exposed to truck damage and older stock buried at the back. The answer is coil racking with shaped cradles, two tiers high, with every coil in its own position and the aisle set against the counterbalance truck and coil ram already on site.

Our published Newport coil case study follows the same pattern, installed in phases over two weekends so production carried on through the week. The same thinking applies to bar and section stockholders, where cantilever arms replace floor bearers. We start with the heaviest item you hold and the truck that lifts it, and specify the structure and load notices from there.

Questions from Newport.

Yes. Coil should not sit on a flat beam or rely on loose chocks. We fit heavy duty cradles on a racking structure so each coil is held in a shaped seat that stops it rolling and spreads the load. Most Newport coil stores we plan are two tiers, accessed by a counterbalance truck with a coil ram, and the aisle is set by that truck and the longest coil. Every position carries a load notice stating the rated coil weight from the design, so the yard team knows what can go where.

In most cases yes. We phase the work in zones, fencing off two or three aisles at a time while the rest of the building keeps picking. Heavy deliveries are timed for quieter overnight windows, and crews can work weekends. Standard racking arrives 4 to 8 weeks from order, and the build itself is usually a matter of days per zone. We agree a sequence with your shift managers before the first frame goes up, so trunk departures on the M4 are not affected.

Mostly support storage outside the cleanroom: lockers for gowning and personal kit, steel shelving for consumables, and longspan bays for spares and boxed equipment parts. Longspan levels typically take around 200, 400 or 800kg depending on the beam. Everything is labelled and kept off the floor so it can be cleaned. We fit during planned downtime or outside production hours, and we do not need to enter controlled areas unless your site rules allow it.

About 70 minutes from our Seven Sisters base for the 50 mile run along the M4. Sites at junction 28 and the docks are reached before the Brynglas tunnels, while sites east of the Usk, such as St Modwen Park, can take a little longer when the tunnels are slow. For surveys we arrive early to beat the morning traffic. Survey appointments are offered within five working days, and urgent damage reports after a truck strike are prioritised. Multi day installs in Newport use crews who stay locally.

It depends on your fleet. As a guide, counterbalance trucks need around 3.5 to 4.2m, reach trucks 2.7 to 3.2m, telescopic reach 2.9 to 3.4m, articulated trucks 1.8 to 2.1m and guided VNA 1.6 to 1.9m. Moving from counterbalance to reach or articulated trucks can add whole runs of racking to the same building. At survey we measure your clear height and columns and model the options before you commit to new trucks.

Yes. A SEMA Approved Rack Inspector can walk the racking after the evening wave or on a weekend, and we work aisle by aisle so you only lose a small part of the pick face at any time. You get a written report with each defect graded and a recommended action. Many Newport operators pair this with monthly recorded checks by their own appointed person, which we can train your team to carry out.

Before the fit out drawings are fixed, ideally while the shell is still being specified. Racking layout drives where the dock doors, lighting runs and any sprinkler heads should go, and it is far cheaper to align them on paper than to move them later. Book a free site survey or send us the drawings. We return a layout and a quote, and standard racking is typically installed 4 to 8 weeks from order.
