Pallet racking in Pontypridd, for the small units and big sheds of the A470 corridor.

Pontypridd sits where the Rhondda meets the Taff, and almost all of its storage work happens a few miles south along the A470 at Treforest Industrial Estate, Upper Boat and Nantgarw. The units there range from small trade workshops to large distribution sheds, and many are let to tenants who change every few years.

We plan, supply, install and inspect pallet racking, longspan shelving and mezzanine floors for those occupiers. Our engineers come over the Heads of the Valleys road from Seven Sisters, so a Pontypridd survey can usually be booked within 5 working days.

Where Pontypridd keeps its stock: Treforest, Upper Boat and the Taff valley floor.

Pontypridd town itself is hemmed in by the valley sides, so the warehousing that serves it sits on the flat floodplain to the south. Treforest Industrial Estate began as the Treforest Trading Estate in 1936 and by 1944 employed almost 16,000 people. Most of it actually falls in Upper Boat, Ton-Teg and Nantgarw rather than Treforest itself, and it runs alongside the A470 dual carriageway roughly three miles north of junction 32 of the M4.

Today the estate is a patchwork. Food production and bakery distribution, trade counters, public sector stores, university facilities and light engineering firms share the same roads, in buildings that vary from 1930s brick sheds with low eaves to modern portal frame units. That mix shapes the racking we fit: wide aisle pallet racking in the larger units, and a great deal of longspan and boltless shelving in the smaller ones.

Closer to the town centre, the smaller estates off Sardis Road and the A4058 serve local trades, builders' merchants and online sellers who need a unit near Pontypridd station. Units there are measured in hundreds rather than thousands of square feet, so storage has to climb the walls instead of spreading across the floor.

  • Treforest Industrial Estate

The largest site, with B1, B2 and B8 units from small workshops to distribution sheds; food, trade counter and engineering stock.

  • Upper Boat Trading Estate and Business Centre

Smaller units off Cardiff Road near the A470 junction, used for light industry, parts storage and office overspill.

  • Maritime Industrial Estate

Units off Sardis Road within walking distance of the town centre, typically trade and workshop tenants.

  • Navigation Park, Abercynon

Business units further up the A470 near Abercynon station, with office, archive and light industrial storage.

  • Nantgarw and Parc Nantgarw

The southern end of the corridor, with larger warehouses that draw on the same M4 junction 32 access.

Racking and shelving we install most around Pontypridd.

These are ordered by how often Pontypridd and Treforest operators ask for them. Smaller tenants usually start with shelving and an inspection; the bigger units off Main Avenue lean towards pallet racking and protection.

Racking safety duties for Pontypridd tenants and landlords.

Under PUWER 1998, racking is work equipment, and whoever controls the workplace is the duty holder. On a multi-let estate like Treforest that is usually the tenant, even when the racking was left behind by the last occupier. HSG76 and the SEMA codes of practice expect you to name a Person Responsible for Racking Safety, keep a log of recorded visual checks, and book an expert inspection at least every 12 months by a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector.

The gap we see most often in Pontypridd is inherited racking with no load notices and no inspection history. A new tenant takes the unit, loads the bays and assumes the landlord dealt with it. Before you load anything, we check the components, confirm safe working loads, fit load signs and start your inspection record, so the next audit or insurance renewal does not turn up a surprise.

One visit, several Pontypridd units: inspecting a multi-tenant estate.

Treforest and Upper Boat are built from rows of small and mid-sized units, often with different tenants in neighbouring doors. Each tenant has a separate duty to inspect its racking, but most only have six to twenty bays, and booking an inspector from Cardiff or Bristol for one small unit can feel out of proportion. Our approach is to group visits: we plan a day on the estate and inspect several tenants' racking in turn, with a separate report for each.

The stock in these units is rarely uniform. One door might hold pallets of packaging, the next has shelving full of automotive parts, and a third mixes cartons on longspan with a single run of pallet racking. We assess each layout on its own terms and recommend changes where a business has outgrown its shelving, rather than pushing everyone into pallet racking they do not need.

Grouped inspection days

We cluster Treforest, Upper Boat and Nantgarw inspections on the same day, with each tenant receiving its own SEMA report.

Getting to Pontypridd from Seven Sisters.

Our engineers leave Seven Sisters on the A4109, join the A465 at Glynneath, then drop down through Hirwaun and Abercynon onto the A470. Pontypridd is about 28 miles and roughly 40 minutes away, with the southern end of Treforest Industrial Estate a few minutes further. That route avoids the M4 entirely, so a morning survey on Main Avenue is not at the mercy of motorway traffic.

Surveys are usually booked within five working days. Installs in occupied units can run early, late or at weekends, and on multi-tenant estates we agree access and yard use with the landlord in advance. Inspections can be fitted around shift patterns, and grouped estate days are planned a few weeks ahead.

A typical Treforest fit-out.

A typical job here is a business moving from a 2,000 to 3,000 square foot unit into something larger on the same estate. They arrive with a mix of old shelving and second hand racking, a growing range of product lines and a forklift on hire. We survey the new unit, check what is worth keeping, and draw a layout that puts fast moving cartons on longspan near the dispatch door and slower pallet stock in a short run of adjustable racking.

The old kit is inspected, any damaged frames are replaced, and everything is load signed before it goes back into use. The install is often split into two short visits so the business keeps trading from the old unit until the move. The photograph shows the planning stage, when the layout for the new unit is drawn up with the client.

Questions from Pontypridd.

Not until it has been checked. Inherited racking in Treforest units often has missing load notices, mixed beam brands and old damage nobody recorded. We carry out a pre-occupation inspection, usually within 5 working days of your call, identify any components that need replacing, confirm safe working loads for your pallets and fit load signs. You then have a dated record to start your own inspection log, which also answers the question your insurer will ask at renewal.

Yes, and it is often the most sensible way to do it. If you or your neighbours on Treforest, Upper Boat or Nantgarw each have a handful of bays, we plan a single estate day, typically covering 3 to 6 small units or around 100 to 150 bays, and book it 2 to 3 weeks ahead so every tenant can clear access. Every tenant still gets a separate SEMA inspection report and a red, amber, green summary, because the duty sits with each occupier. Landlords and managing agents often repeat the day every 12 months to keep the whole terrace on one cycle.

For boltless or longspan shelving supplied from stock, a typical small unit near Pontypridd town centre takes one to two days on site after the survey. Larger fit-outs that combine shelving with pallet racking are normally 4 to 8 weeks from order, depending on component lead times. If you are working to a lease start date, tell us at the survey and we will plan the delivery and install around it.

It depends on whether your goods arrive and leave on pallets. If you hand pick cartons and parts, longspan with tiers rated around 200, 400 or 800kg per level is usually the better fit and is easier to relocate. If you put away full pallets with a forklift, you need adjustable pallet racking with beams of 1500 to 5000mm. Many Treforest tenants end up with both: a short run of pallet racking and a longer run of shelving.

In most leases on the Pontypridd estates, the tenant controls the racking day to day and is the duty holder under PUWER 1998. That means you name a Person Responsible for Racking Safety, record regular visual checks and arrange an expert inspection at least once every 12 months. Check your lease, as a few landlords retain fixtures, but in practice we find the tenant is the one asked for inspection records by auditors and insurers.

Often, yes. The older brick sheds on Treforest Industrial Estate can have lower eaves and uneven floor slabs, so we check clear height, column positions and slab condition at the survey. Where there is room, a mezzanine for packing or light storage is designed to suit, with steelwork fabricated in 1 to 3 weeks. We handle the building control submission and fit handrails, stairs and a pallet gate as part of the job.

Yes. We dismantle the racking in your current unit, inspect every frame and beam, replace anything damaged and rebuild it to a new layout in the new building. A move of 20 to 40 bays within Treforest, or between Upper Boat and Nantgarw, usually takes 2 to 4 days on site, split over two visits so you keep picking from the old unit while the first runs go up in the new one. Replacement frames and beams are typically available within 1 to 2 weeks, so order them from the survey.
