Pallet racking in Llanelli, rated for steel coil, castings and chilled food.

Llanelli still rolls tinplate at Trostre, and the town's storage problems follow from that: dense steel, heavy castings, slit coil and fabricated parts stacked on racking that was often bought second hand decades ago. On Dafen and Llanelli Gate, food producers and wholesale distributors add chilled, frozen and ambient stock moving on tight delivery windows.

We design, install, repair and inspect pallet racking for Llanelli sites from Dafen and Llanelli Gate to Bynea and Trostre. Our depot at Seven Sisters is about 40 minutes away via the M4 to junction 48, so surveys and urgent repairs are a same week job.

Llanelli's industrial base: tinplate, metalwork and food.

Trostre has made tin, chrome and polymer coated packaging steel since the early 1950s and produces roughly 380,000 to 400,000 tonnes a year for food and drinks cans, bakeware and other packaging. Around it sits a ring of smaller firms that cut, press, machine, coat and stock metal. Those buildings tend to carry loads far heavier than a typical retail pallet, and a lot of them still run on mixed or unlabelled racking inherited from a previous tenant.

Dafen Industrial Estate and Llanelli Gate form an established industrial area on the north east side of town, both reached from M4 junction 48 along the A4138. Units there are typically 10,000 to 40,000 square foot sheds used for trade distribution, engineering, food production and light manufacturing, where a standard adjustable pallet racking layout with reach truck aisles fits well. Bynea, reached from junction 47 via the A484, has smaller storage and workshop units.

Food is the town's second storage story. Glanlliedi, on the Dafen side, has a small food park with frozen and chilled production, and food and grocery wholesalers run sheds across Dafen and Llanelli Gate. Storage there is driven by temperature, stock rotation and hygiene audits rather than raw weight. The wider hinterland adds Cross Hands Food Park, about 12 miles and 20 minutes north up the A476, which employs around 1,500 people and is usually grouped with our Ammanford and Carmarthen visits.

  • Trostre Industrial Park

Engineering and metal service units beside the tinplate works, often storing coil, sheet and tooling.

  • Dafen Industrial Estate

Just over 160,000 square feet of industrial space off the A4138, with fabrication, trade stock and parts warehousing.

  • Llanelli Gate

Modern warehouse and industrial units on the north east edge of town, close to M4 junction 48.

  • Heol Cropin, Dafen

Larger warehouse and manufacturing buildings of up to around 40,000 square feet, suited to wide aisle pallet racking.

  • Bynea Business Park

Smaller storage and workshop units reached from junction 47 via the A484, where shelving and longspan often beat full pallet racking.

  • Glanlliedi Food Park, Dafen

Small food production units where frozen and chilled stock needs racking that copes with low temperatures and wash down.

What Llanelli sites ask us for, most requested first.

The order below reflects the work we actually quote in and around Llanelli. Metal and engineering sites lead the list, followed by the food producers and distributors on Dafen and Llanelli Gate and the trade counters across the estate.

Racking safety duties at Llanelli metal and food sites.

Under PUWER 1998 your racking is work equipment, and HSG76 expects the operator to appoint a person responsible for racking safety, to run recorded visual checks, typically weekly, and to have an annual expert inspection carried out by a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. In Llanelli engineering units the risk sits in the loads themselves: a pallet of castings or a stack of blanks can be several times heavier than the stock the racking was first rated for. The first question at any inspection here is whether the load notices still match what is actually on the beams.

Food sites on Dafen, Glanlliedi and Llanelli Gate face a different pressure. Retailer and BRCGS style hygiene audits examine racking condition, cleanability and pest control access, and a damaged upright noted by an auditor becomes a corrective action with a deadline. We schedule inspections to land before audit windows and write reports an auditor can follow, so the appointed person can show what was found, what was offloaded and when the repair was signed off.

Storing metal in Llanelli: coil, castings and tinplate offcuts.

Llanelli is a tinplate town. The industry grew here long before Trostre opened, and when the works was built on marshland after the war it drew on a workforce that already knew the metal trade. That heritage shows in the warehouses: stockholders, fabricators, machine shops and coaters whose stock is coil, sheet, plate and castings rather than cartons. Those loads are heavy, often irregular and frequently moved by overhead crane as well as forklift.

Storage for this kind of stock starts with honest load data. We weigh or confirm the heaviest unit loads, check the slab where possible, then specify the system around them: coil cradles for slit coil, cantilever arms for long section, and heavy duty adjustable pallet racking with steel decking for castings and dies. Where a site has inherited racking from more than one manufacturer, we tell you plainly that it cannot be rated with confidence and quote to replace it bay by bay while you keep trading.

One manufacturer per run

Mixed components cannot be load rated reliably, so each run we design comes from a single manufacturer's tested data.

Decking for loads that are not palletised

Steel decking supports castings, die sets and offcut stillages that will not sit squarely across two beams.

Crane and forklift access planned together

Where an overhead crane serves the bay, we set rack heights and orientation so the hook and the truck do not compete.

Load notices on every run

Ratings for the configuration as built, posted at the end of each run so shift teams know the limit.

Getting to Llanelli sites from Seven Sisters.

Our vans leave Seven Sisters down the A4109 and A465 to Neath, join the M4 at junction 43 and leave at junction 48 for Dafen, Llanelli Gate and Trostre, or at junction 47 for Bynea via the A484. The run is about 28 miles and 40 minutes outside rush hour, so a Llanelli survey and an inspection on the same estate fit into one working day.

Surveys are usually booked within 5 working days. Installs on metal sites are often planned around maintenance shutdowns or weekend downtime, and food sites around production changeovers, so we work early starts, nights and weekends when that keeps your lines running. Annual inspections for several Llanelli units can be grouped into a single visit.

A typical Llanelli job: replacing unrated racking for heavy castings.

A common Llanelli brief starts with an engineering or metals business that took over a building with racking already in it. The beams carry no load notices, the frames come from two or three manufacturers, and the stock is heavier than anything the original owner stored. Nobody can say what the racking is rated for, which is a real safety gap when the loads are castings or plate.

The answer is usually new adjustable pallet racking from a single manufacturer, steel decking on the levels holding irregular items and load notices on every run. We decant stock bay by bay into temporary floor positions so the site keeps working, then remove the old steel. Our Llanelli castings case study shows how that sequence ran in practice.

Questions from Llanelli.

Only if every component comes from the same manufacturer and can be identified. We check frame and beam profiles, connectors and markings, and measure frame depths, usually 900 or 1100mm, and beam lengths, which run from 1500 to 5000mm. That manufacturer's design data then gives load notices for the configuration as built, posted at the end of each run. If a run mixes two or more makes, common in older units on Dafen and around Trostre, it cannot be rated with confidence. We then quote to replace it, typically 4 to 8 weeks from order, changing over a few bays at a time so most positions stay in use.

For coil stored eye horizontal, coil cradles or dedicated coil racking with chocked cradles hold each coil securely and give a clear pick face for a crane or a forklift with a ram. For lighter coil on pallets, heavy duty pallet racking with steel decking or coil support bars can work. We confirm the heaviest coil weight and outside diameter, check your handling equipment and then specify. Lead time for a standard coil cradle installation is usually 4 to 8 weeks from order.

Yes. Many food producers and distributors on Dafen, Glanlliedi and Llanelli Gate prefer inspections during planned shutdowns, deep cleans or weekend downtime, because chill rooms and despatch areas are clear and safe to walk. A SEMA approved inspection of a typical 1,000 to 2,000 pallet position site takes one day, and from junction 48 we are on most of these estates within a few minutes. We follow your hygiene rules for clothing, hair covering and tools, and the written report arrives within about a week so you have it before your next retailer or BRCGS audit.

Our depot at Seven Sisters is about 40 minutes from M4 junction 48, so for a red risk upright in Llanelli we can usually attend the same day or the next morning. The first visit offloads and isolates the damaged bay and confirms the replacement part. Matching components from the same manufacturer are then fitted, often within a few days for common frame and beam sizes. If the frame is an obsolete pattern, we will advise on a replacement section rather than a mismatched part.

It depends on your trucks and pick rate. Counterbalance trucks need aisles of 3.5 to 4.2 metres, reach trucks 2.7 to 3.2 metres, articulated trucks 1.8 to 2.1 metres and guided very narrow aisle trucks 1.6 to 1.9 metres. On a typical Dafen or Llanelli Gate shed, moving from counterbalance to reach trucks can add a whole run of racking. We draw both layouts at survey, count the positions and show what changes in floor space before you commit.

Yes. Many metal processors and machine shops in Llanelli run two or three shifts, so we often install or repair in the gaps: Friday night to Monday morning, or across a planned maintenance week. A new installation of 300 to 500 positions typically needs 3 to 7 working days on site. We agree a phasing plan with your appointed person so each completed area can be signed off and loaded before the next is stripped.

Often, if there is enough clear height. A storage or office mezzanine can roughly double usable floor area in a unit with good headroom, which suits smaller Llanelli businesses that cannot easily move. We check column positions, the slab, fire escape routes and building regulations needs at survey. Mezzanine steelwork is usually installed in 1 to 3 weeks on site, and we can combine it with longspan shelving on the upper deck for spares and boxed stock.

Other towns we cover west of Swansea.

Llanelli sits between the Swansea Bay industrial belt and the agricultural west. The same crews cover Swansea and Port Talbot to the east, Carmarthen and Ammanford to the north and Haverfordwest further west, so a visit here can be grouped with nearby sites.
