Pallet racking in Swansea, from Llansamlet trade counters to Fforestfach engineering shops.
Swansea's storage is spread across three very different patches of ground. Llansamlet's Enterprise Park is trade counters and builders merchants off M4 junctions 44 and 45, Swansea West at Fforestfach is engineering and distribution off the A483, and the docks along Fabian Way handle steel, project cargo and dry bulk.
We are based at Seven Sisters, so a Llansamlet unit is about 25 minutes down the A465 and A4230. We design, install, inspect and repair pallet racking, cantilever and shelving for Swansea operators, and we have already put cantilever tool and jig storage into a Swansea engineering workshop.

Where Swansea keeps its stock.
The Lower Swansea Valley was once lined with copper and zinc smelters; the Swansea Vale works at Llansamlet was the first British smelter built mainly for zinc, in 1876. After the clean up, the valley floor became Swansea Enterprise Park, designated in 1981 and now more than 700 acres of retail, trade park and industrial units. That history explains the mix you meet on a survey here: modern portal frame trade units with good eaves, next to older single storey sheds on reclaimed ground where floor slabs need checking before anyone fixes a baseplate.
West of the city, Swansea West Industrial Estate at Fforestfach sits about 2 miles from junction 47 and carries distribution, glass, electrical wholesale and light engineering occupiers. Down at the waterfront, the ABP port handles more than 500,000 tonnes a year of agribulks, aggregates, steel and project cargo, with 15,000 square metres of covered warehousing at its D shed terminal. Between the two, Swansea University's Bay Campus on Fabian Way has brought engineering research and small spin out workshops into SA1, often in units that were never laid out for racking.
So a Swansea racking enquiry is rarely a single big distribution shed. It is more often a 1,500 to 10,000 square foot trade or engineering unit where every metre of wall and every bay of height has to earn its keep.

Racking and shelving we fit in Swansea, in order of demand.
This order reflects what Swansea units actually ask for: trade counter stock, long engineering materials and tooling, then the inspection work that every racked site needs.
Racking inspections for Swansea trade counters and workshops.
Under PUWER 1998 and the HSE's guidance HSG76, the business that occupies a racked unit is the duty holder. That means naming a person responsible for racking safety, recording regular visual checks, and arranging an inspection at least every 12 months by a technically competent person, which in practice means a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. On a Llansamlet trade counter the pressure point is mixed traffic: a forklift unloading a delivery at 8am while builders walk the aisle with trolleys. That is when uprights take knocks that nobody reports.
In Fforestfach and Swansea Vale engineering shops the risk looks different. Cantilever arms get overloaded when a heavier jig turns up, and racking next to a press or a crane bay can be clipped by a slung load. Our inspector checks load notices against what is actually on the arms, looks at crane approach clearances and records it all in a report the appointed person can file for an insurer or a landlord's surveyor.
Swansea engineering, tooling and long stock off the floor.
Swansea has a long tail of small and medium manufacturers: precision machining around Fforestfach, fabrication on the Swansea Vale and Enterprise Park estates, and spin out companies growing out of the university's engineering school on the Bay Campus. They share one storage problem. Their most valuable stock is long, awkward or heavy: press tools, welding jigs, bar, tube and sheet. It ends up on the floor or on improvised timber bearers, where it blocks crane runs and walkways and takes three lifts to reach.
We solved exactly that for a Swansea engineering workshop by fitting double sided cantilever racking with adjustable arms, installed around two production shifts with the overhead crane route kept clear. The same approach suits a spin out moving from a lab bench into its first production unit, or a merchant's yard holding steel lengths and timber. We size arm length to the deepest item, check the slab for base fixings and keep a forklift or crane approach on each face.

Getting to Swansea from Seven Sisters.
From Seven Sisters we come down the A4109 to the A465, then take the A4230 or M4 junction 43 into Llansamlet. Swansea Enterprise Park is roughly 16 miles and 25 minutes away, Fabian Way and the docks about 30 minutes, and Fforestfach about 22 miles and 35 minutes once we have crossed the city on the A483 or run along the M4 to junction 47. That puts our survey vans and installation crews in Swansea before most trade counters open.
Surveys are usually booked within 5 working days. Installs are planned around how Swansea businesses trade: merchants often want us in after the counter closes or on a Sunday, and engineering shops prefer us to work on the shift that is not using the crane. Inspections can start at 6am so that the report is finished before the first delivery arrives.

A typical Swansea project: cantilever for tooling and jigs.
Our Swansea case study is an engineering workshop that kept its press tooling and jigs on the floor and on timber bearers. Every tool change meant moving two or three others, and lifting operations crossed walkways each shift. We specified double sided cantilever with height adjustable arms, kept the overhead crane route clear down the full run and fitted end protection where the run met a forklift gangway.
Plenty of Swansea jobs follow a similar pattern on a different scale. A merchant on the Enterprise Park may need cantilever in the yard for steel and timber and longspan behind the counter. A Fforestfach fabricator may need pallet racking for consumables beside a cantilever run for bar. We survey, draw the layout, fit it around trading hours and hand over load notices and a drawing.

Questions from Swansea.
Yes. Most Swansea Enterprise Park merchants trade from about 7am, so we work behind a barriered zone during the day or move in after close and at weekends. A typical counter fit out of longspan at the front and 6 to 10 bays of pallet racking at the back takes 1 to 3 days on site. We sequence the work so the counter, the tills and the fire exits stay usable, and we leave the aisle swept and the load notices fixed before you reopen.
It should not, if the layout is drawn around the crane. Cantilever has no front upright, so a slung load can be lowered straight onto the arms. We measure hook height, the crane's approach and the travel of the bridge, then set column height and arm positions so the crane clears the top of the run. On our Swansea tool and jig project the full length of the crane route was kept clear during installation, with work done around two production shifts.
Swansea Vale and parts of the Enterprise Park sit on reclaimed smelting land, and slabs vary from unit to unit. We ask for the landlord's slab specification where it exists, look at joints, cracks and slab depth on the survey, and if there is doubt we recommend a core test before fixing heavy frames. Baseplate size and fixings are then chosen to suit. It is a short extra step that avoids racking moving on a weak slab later.
It depends on height, beam length and load, so we price from a survey rather than a list. As a guide, a 5,000 square foot unit with 900 or 1100mm deep frames and 2700mm beams will usually need 20 to 40 bays. Used racking, which we also supply and can buy from you, can bring the cost down where the frames are in good condition. Installs are normally 4 to 8 weeks from order, and the survey is free.
Yes. Many Swansea merchants and parts distributors also have branches in Llanelli, Neath and Port Talbot. We can schedule the inspections on consecutive days with one SEMA Approved Rack Inspector, issue a separate report for each site and a summary for the person responsible for racking safety across the group. Red risk items are reported on the day, so the branch can offload the bay before we leave.
Start with what you hold and how it moves. A spin out leaving a Bay Campus lab usually needs light shelving for components, a few bays of pallet racking for incoming materials and sometimes cantilever for long test pieces. We survey the unit, check whether the lease allows floor fixings and draw a layout that can grow in stages, so you buy the first 10 or 20 bays now and extend later without redesigning.
Yes. Newer units on Clase Road and around Swansea East Trade Park often have enough clear height for a mezzanine over the goods in area or the counter. The steelwork usually takes 1 to 3 weeks on site once drawings and building control are agreed. We include the staircase, handrails, pallet gate and lighting coordination, and we confirm with the landlord before anything is fixed to the slab or the frame.
