Pallet racking in Ammanford, from a crew one valley over in Seven Sisters.

Ammanford's working floor space sits mostly outside the town: the units off the A483 at Capel Hendre and Parc Hendre, the small yards at Pantyffynnon by the Heart of Wales line, and the newer plots at Cross Hands. Occupiers are fabricators, pipework shops, scaffold and plant firms, builders merchants and farm machinery dealers, so the storage problem is usually long, awkward and heavy rather than fast moving.

We are based at Seven Sisters, on the far side of the hill, and reach the Amman Valley over Coelbren and Brynamman. That puts us closer to Ammanford than most Swansea or Cardiff installers, and it makes a same week survey realistic.

Where Ammanford stores, fabricates and dispatches.

Ammanford grew on anthracite. The Amman Valley pits and the 1840s railway from Llanelly built the town, Ammanford Colliery closed in 1976, Abernant in 1988, and Betws New Mine, the last mine in the Amman Valley, in June 2003. Today much of the area's employment land sits on estates along the A483 rather than in the valley bottom. Capel Hendre Industrial Estate, about three miles south west of the town centre, is the largest of these: a dense estate of small and mid sized units with consent for B1, B2 and B8 uses, so workshops, light manufacturing and storage sit side by side on the same road.

That mix shapes the racking we fit here. A typical Capel Hendre or Pantyffynnon unit is 6 to 8 metres to the eaves, has a roller shutter at one end and a forklift that also works the yard. Stock is pipe, box section, sheet, timber, pallets of fixings and shelves of spares, often in the same building. Few sites need very narrow aisle or high bay schemes. Most need one or two runs of adjustable pallet racking, a cantilever run against a side wall and longspan for the counter and stores.

About 5 miles west of the town, Cross Hands adds a different profile: chilled and ambient food processing at Cross Hands Food Park and serviced B1 and B8 plots at Cross Hands East, where new buildings arrive empty and need a racking layout before the first delivery.

  • Capel Hendre Industrial Estate

Engineering, pipework, scaffolding and trade units; mixed pallet, bar and sheet storage in compact single bay buildings.

  • Parc Hendre

Newer council plots beside Capel Hendre, suited to self built units that need racking designed in from day one.

  • Pantyffynnon

Small estate south of the town on the A483, mostly trade counters, workshops and storage yards.

  • Cross Hands Food Park

Meat processing, food wholesale and co packing, with chilled stores, pallet racking and pick faces.

  • Cross Hands East Strategic Employment Site

Serviced plots of 0.40 to 1.67 acres with B1 and B8 consent, where empty new buildings need first fit racking.

Pallet racking, cantilever and shelving for Ammanford units, ranked by how often we fit them.

The order below reflects what Amman Valley occupiers actually ask for. Long stock and spares come before pallets here, which is the reverse of most South Wales towns.

Racking inspections for Ammanford workshops and merchants.

Under PUWER 1998 the racking in your unit is work equipment, and HSE guidance HSG76 expects the business to keep it safe. In a small Capel Hendre workshop that usually means one named person, often the owner or the stores lead, acting as the person responsible for racking safety. They should run recorded visual checks, typically weekly, and arrange an annual expert inspection by a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. The duty is the same for a three person fabrication shop as for a 200 pallet warehouse.

What changes in Ammanford is where the damage comes from. Cantilever arms take strikes from long bundles being slewed off a forklift. Racking near the shutter gets hit by machines coming in from a wet yard. Builders merchants reload frames during trading hours. We inspect around that pattern, starting with the door end and the cantilever bases, and we can come early before the counter opens so nobody has to close the trade side for the morning.

Long stock and spares in Ammanford: cantilever outside, longspan inside.

The strongest pattern across the Ammanford estates is that the problem stock is long rather than palletised. Fabricators and pipework firms at Capel Hendre hold 6 metre tube and box section. Builders merchants carry timber packs, plasterboard and steel lintels. Farm machinery and agricultural engineering businesses serving the Tywi and Amman valleys hold hundreds of small spares that must be found in seconds when a tractor is down in silage season. Standard pallet racking handles none of these well.

So the layout we draw most often in Ammanford has two halves. Cantilever runs along a side wall or under a canopy for bar, pipe and timber, loaded side on by forklift with no beams in the way. Longspan shelving fills the area behind the trade counter or parts desk, labelled by location so a part number leads straight to a shelf. Pallet racking, where it appears at all, is a short run for consumables. Because we are 35 to 40 minutes away over Brynamman, we can measure the stock lengths on site rather than relying on a sketch.

Measure the longest bundle

Arm length and column spacing are set from your real stock, so 6 metre tube does not overhang into the aisle.

Indoor or canopy cantilever

Covered yard runs keep timber dry. Galvanised options suit sites exposed to the valley weather.

Parts that can be found fast

Longspan bays with location labels help agricultural spares counters answer a breakdown call quickly.

Room for the forklift

Counterbalance trucks need roughly 3.5 to 4.2m aisles, so we plan cantilever and shelving around the existing truck.

Getting to Ammanford from Seven Sisters.

Our usual route leaves Seven Sisters for Coelbren and the A4067, crosses to Brynamman and drops down the Amman Valley through Glanamman and Garnant to Ammanford. It is about 20 miles and 35 to 40 minutes. If the mountain road is icy we go round by Pontardawe on the A474, which adds ten minutes. For Llandeilo and the farms beyond, the A4069 over the Black Mountain is a direct link north from Brynamman.

Surveys are normally booked within five working days and take an hour or two in a single unit. Installs on the Capel Hendre and Pantyffynnon estates are usually one to three days on site for a cantilever and longspan scheme, and longer for a full warehouse fit. We can work Saturdays or early starts for trade counters that cannot close, and inspections for several units on the same estate can be grouped into one visit to keep travel down.

A typical Ammanford fit: a merchant yard and parts store.

A typical job here is a builders merchant or agricultural engineer moving into a larger unit at Capel Hendre or Parc Hendre. The brief combines three things: getting timber, steel and pipe off the yard floor, giving the parts counter proper shelving, and keeping a forklift route clear from the shutter to the yard. We survey the stock lengths, the slab and the truck, then draw one plan that covers all three.

The result is usually a double sided cantilever run in the yard or along a wall, two or three runs of longspan behind the counter, and a short run of pallet racking for bagged and boxed goods. The installation is phased so the business keeps trading, with the counter shelving done first. Our long extrusion cantilever project in Neath shows the same approach on a larger scale.

Questions from Ammanford.

Yes. Many Capel Hendre and Pantyffynnon sites keep timber and steel in the yard, and a covered cantilever run is the usual answer. We check the ground first, because yard concrete is often thinner than the slab inside. Columns are bolted to suitable concrete, arms are sized to the longest bundle, and galvanised finishes are available for exposed runs. A single sided run of 3 to 4 bays is normally installed in one day once the steel is delivered, which is typically 4 to 8 weeks from order.

Longspan shelving is usually the right choice. It takes heavy items such as gearbox parts on the lower levels, at around 800kg per level, and lighter filters and seals higher up at 200 or 400kg per level. Beam lengths of 1500 to 2400mm keep bays easy to reach from a parts counter. We add location labels so staff can match a part number to a shelf quickly when a farmer calls with a breakdown. For bulky items such as tines and blades, a short cantilever run alongside often works better than shelving.

We are based at Seven Sisters, about 20 miles from Ammanford by road. The normal drive over Coelbren and Brynamman takes 35 to 40 minutes, or about 50 minutes via Pontardawe if the hill road is bad. Surveys are usually booked within five working days. For damage found on an inspection, we aim to get replacement uprights or beams fitted as soon as parts are available, and in the meantime we advise on offloading and isolating the affected bay so you can keep working safely.

The legal duty under PUWER 1998 applies to any racking used at work, whatever the size. HSG76 recommends an expert inspection at least once every 12 months by a technically competent person, which in practice means a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. For a small Amman Valley workshop the visit is quick, often under an hour, and if several units on the same estate book together we can group them into one trip. Between inspections, your nominated person should record weekly visual checks.

Yes, and it is how most merchant jobs in the Ammanford and Cross Hands area are done. We phase the work: counter shelving first, then racking in the warehouse, then cantilever in the yard. Each phase is fenced off while it is being built, and we can start at 6am or work Saturdays so the trade counter keeps serving. On a typical merchant fit we are on site for 2 to 4 days in total, spread over a week or two.

Ideally before the slab is poured or the building layout is fixed. Plots at Cross Hands East are 0.40 to 1.67 acres, so buildings are compact and every metre of floor matters. If we see the drawings early we can match column grids, doors and lighting to the racking and aisle layout, and check the slab specification with your contractor. Racking then goes in 4 to 8 weeks from order, timed for handover rather than months after you move in.

Often, yes. Used pallet racking and cantilever can cost substantially less than new and can be moved to your next unit if the business grows. Everything we supply used is inspected, matched to one manufacturer and system, and fitted with correct load signs, so it meets the same standards as new. The main limit is availability of a specific frame height or arm length, so we check stock against your survey before quoting.

Other towns we cover from Seven Sisters.

Ammanford sits between the Swansea Valley and the Tywi. From the same base we also cover Llanelli and Carmarthen to the west, Swansea and Neath down the A474, and Port Talbot along the M4. Many customers there share the same suppliers and trade routes as Amman Valley firms.
