The challenge.

  • The site had inherited a run assembled from components of more than one manufacturer, with no load notices and no record of what it was rated for.
  • Castings are dense and heavy, so the unknown ratings were a real risk rather than a paperwork gap.

The constraints.

  • Stock had to stay accessible while the old run was replaced.
  • Some castings are irregular and need decking rather than pallets alone.

What we specified, and why.

Each line of the specification answers one part of the problem. Here is the reasoning, line by line.

New adjustable pallet racking from a single manufacturer
Components are not interchangeable between manufacturers. A mixed run cannot be load rated with confidence.
Steel decking on the levels carrying irregular castings
Supports loads that do not sit squarely on a pallet.
Load notices on every run
Ratings come from the manufacturer's design data for the configuration as built.

Installation.

  • Stock was decanted bay by bay into temporary floor positions and returned as each new bay was signed off.
  • The old components were removed from site and the redundant steel taken back.

The outcome.

  • Every bay now carries a load notice that matches the configuration on the floor.
  • The first annual inspection was booked at handover.
For the first time we know exactly what each level is rated for, and it is written on the end of the run.
