Pallet racking in Newtown, planned for small Severn valley units and long road days.
Newtown is the biggest manufacturing town in Montgomeryshire, but its storage is spread across dozens of modest units on Mochdre, Vastre and Dyffryn rather than one large distribution shed. Most sites we see here hold a few hundred pallet positions, a parts store and a packing bench, often squeezed under a low eaves line.
Our yard at Seven Sisters is around two hours away up the A483, so we treat every Newtown job as a planned trip: survey and measure in one visit, deliver and fit in a single booked block, and inspect several units on the same day to keep travel off your bill.

Mochdre, Vastre and Dyffryn: where Newtown keeps its stock.
Newtown was designated a new town in 1967, and the estates built to bring employers into Mid Wales still shape what its warehouses look like. Mochdre, on the south western edge of the town, is the largest and runs from terraced starter units of a few hundred square feet up to self contained factories with their own yards. Vastre, on the eastern side towards Kerry and the A489, is a safeguarded employment site in the Powys Local Development Plan and mixes foundry, fabrication and trade occupiers. Dyffryn, off Pool Road on the north eastern side of town, is mostly smaller light industrial and service units.
The common pattern is a 1970s or 1980s portal frame building with eaves often around 6 metres in our experience, a single roller door and a floor that was never laid with high bay racking in mind. That rules out very narrow aisle trucks on most sites and points towards adjustable pallet racking for a counterbalance or reach truck, longspan shelving for components, and a mezzanine to use the height that a pallet layout cannot.
Because the River Severn valley limits how far the town can spread, good units rarely sit empty for long. Businesses that outgrow a unit tend to add a mezzanine or reorganise the racking rather than move, which is where most of our Newtown enquiries start.
Mochdre Industrial Estate
Newtown's largest estate: engineering, automation and packaging machinery builders storing steel, sub assemblies and spares in units from 750 sq ft upwards.
Vastre Industrial Estate
Eastern estate off the A489 with foundry, welding and fabrication work, plus trade counters holding long lengths and heavy pallets.
Dyffryn Industrial Estate
Smaller units off Pool Road on the north eastern side of town, used by light manufacturers, vehicle trades and local distributors, mostly shelving and short runs of racking.
Mochdre Enterprise Park
Newer business units next to the main estate, suited to compact pallet racking, picking shelving and small mezzanines.
What Newtown manufacturers ask us for most.
Ordered by how often each comes up on Newtown sites. Nearly every job here combines two or three of these, so we price them together and fit them in one visit rather than three.
Racking safety duties for small Newtown sites with one forklift and many hats.
On a Newtown site with eight or ten staff, the person responsible for racking safety is often also the production manager, the buyer and the first aider. PUWER 1998 still applies in full, and HSG76 still expects an appointed person who records regular visual checks, deals with reported damage straight away and arranges an annual expert inspection by a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. We help small operators set that up in a way that fits one person's week: a simple weekly checklist, a damage reporting sheet by the truck charger and a clear rule on who can offload a damaged bay.
The risks here are less about multi-shift speed and more about mixed use. The same counterbalance truck unloads steel deliveries, feeds a machine and loads the van, often in an aisle that doubles as a walkway. Uprights next to roller doors and shared aisles take most of the knocks. Our inspectors look at those points first, check load signs against what is actually being stored, and flag where Armco or column guards would stop the same damage recurring between annual visits.
From the world's first mail-order warehouse to today's Newtown makers.
Pryce Pryce-Jones sent his first mail-order catalogue of Welsh flannel out of Newtown in 1861, and in 1879 opened the Royal Welsh Warehouse beside the railway station so parcels could go straight from the stock floor onto trains. That idea, a small town shipping specialist goods to customers who never visit, still describes many Newtown businesses. Automation and packaging machinery builders, foundry and fabrication shops, and online sellers of niche products all hold a wide range of parts or finished lines and send them out in small consignments across the UK.
That shapes the storage we design. Rather than deep blocks of the same pallet, a Newtown unit typically needs a mix: pallet racking for raw material and bulk packaging, longspan or shelving for picking, a mezzanine for packing benches and returns, and enough clear floor around the roller door for courier collections. Because we are around two hours away, we phase the work so that each trip completes a whole stage and production is never left half disrupted.

Getting to Newtown from Seven Sisters and how we schedule the work.
From Seven Sisters our vans run north through Sennybridge and Brecon, up the A470 to Builth Wells and then the A483 through Llandrindod Wells into Newtown, about 75 miles and roughly two hours. Since the Newtown bypass opened in February 2019, loaded lorries reach Mochdre and Vastre without crossing the town centre, which makes early morning deliveries far more predictable.
We plan surveys on days when we already have other Mid Wales visits, so a survey slot is normally available within 10 working days. Installations are booked as continuous blocks of one to five days with the crew staying overnight, so there are no half days lost to travel. Annual inspections are grouped by estate, and we can work evenings, weekends or a planned shutdown when a production line cannot stop during the week.

A typical Newtown project: a mezzanine and racking refit in a Mochdre unit.
A typical job here starts with a manufacturer that has run out of floor. Raw material pallets sit in the aisles, finished goods wait by the door and packing happens wherever there is a free table. The building cannot grow and the town has few spare units, so the brief is to fit more into the same shell without stopping production for long.
We survey and measure on the first visit, then return with one installation block. The usual result is a mezzanine along one wall for packing and spares, adjustable pallet racking reset to suit the column grid and the counterbalance truck, and longspan bays for components on the ground floor. Fitting often runs over a weekend with the crew staying in town, and we finish with load signs, a handover and the first visual inspection record for the appointed person.

Questions from Newtown.
Less than most people expect. We group Newtown work so that one trip covers a full job or several sites. A survey is booked alongside other Mid Wales visits, an installation runs as one continuous block of 1 to 5 days with the crew staying locally, and inspections are grouped by estate. That means you pay for one journey per stage, not one per day. We state travel and accommodation as a separate line on the quotation so you can see exactly what it adds.
Often, yes. In our experience many Mochdre units have eaves of around 6 metres, which is usually enough for a single storey mezzanine used for packing, offices or parts storage, with headroom underneath for shelving or a picking area. Whether it works depends on the clear height under the haunch, the floor slab and where the columns can land. We measure all of that on the survey, then send a layout with stair, gate and handrail positions before you commit. Steelwork normally takes 1 to 3 weeks on site.
Yes, and for most Newtown manufacturers we recommend it. Racking is normally fitted 4 to 8 weeks from order, so we agree the layout and stock movement well ahead. Your team clears the affected bays on Friday afternoon, our crew fits over 2 days, Saturday and Sunday, while staying overnight in the area, and you get a working floor with load signs on Monday morning. Larger schemes can be phased across 2 weekends, one half of the unit at a time, so you are never without storage.
HSG76 and the SEMA codes of practice expect an annual expert inspection regardless of site size, alongside regular visual checks by your appointed person. A small site is not lower risk: with one truck doing deliveries, production feeding and loading, the same few uprights take repeated knocks. An inspection for a single Newtown unit usually takes a couple of hours, and grouping it with neighbouring sites on Vastre or Mochdre keeps the cost down.
Usually a combination. Cantilever racking holds tube, box section and bar in lengths, sorted by profile so the right stock comes out without moving everything above it. Sheet is often best on heavy duty pallet racking with decking, using frames 900 or 1100mm deep and beams from 1500 to 5000mm to suit the sheet size. Offcuts go into longspan bays rated at around 200, 400 or 800kg per level. We check forklift access, the roller door and your longest lengths first, and most schemes are installed 4 to 8 weeks from order.
In most cases. We have been trading since 2009 and see a lot of secondhand stock moving between Newtown estates. We can survey the existing frames and beams within 10 working days, identify the manufacturer and check that components are compatible, then design a layout for the new unit, adding new or used parts to match. Damaged components are replaced, not refitted. Strip out, transport and rebuild usually run as one block of 1 to 5 days, so the move from one estate to another takes as few days as possible.
For hundreds of low volume lines, steel shelving bays with clear location labels usually beat pallet racking. Fast movers go at waist height nearest the packing bench, slow movers higher up, and bulk overstock sits on longspan bays rated at around 200, 400 or 800kg per level, or a short run of pallet racking. If floor space is tight, a mezzanine moves packing and returns upstairs, and its steelwork normally takes 1 to 3 weeks on site. We plan the layout around your picking route, not just the shelf count.
Other towns we cover around Newtown.
Newtown sits on the A483 and A489, so our Mid Wales and border trips usually link several sites. When we are on the road for a Newtown job we often combine it with work in Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Telford or Wrexham to the north and east, or on the run back south through Hereford.
