Pallet racking in Deeside, for the Industrial Park, Broughton supply chain and the Shotton mills.
Deeside is the industrial strip of Flintshire along the canalised River Dee: Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Sealand and Broughton, with Deeside Industrial Park built on the reclaimed marsh of the old Shotton steelworks. Its storage problems are specific: coated steel coil, recycled fibre bales, and machined aerospace parts that cannot pick up a scratch on the way to the wing line.
We design, install and inspect racking, shelving and mesh partitions across the Deeside Enterprise Zone, and plan each visit as a two day trip up the A483 so the survey, the measurements and the drawings are done in one go.

Pallet racking Deeside: where the Dee corridor stores, makes and ships.
Deeside Industrial Park is the biggest employment area in the conurbation, with jobs running from construction products to food production. It sits on the north bank of the Dee, between the Flintshire Bridge and the Sealand border, and is split into numbered zones. Zone 2 alone covers about 105 acres and 850,000 square feet of industrial, warehouse and office space beside the A550, around four miles of dual carriageway from junction 16 of the M56. Units range from 1970s portal frames with low eaves to new build sheds with high eaves and large yards, so one estate can need anything from wide aisle racking to very narrow aisle schemes.
Across the river the picture changes. Shotton is still a steel coating site, and the old newsprint mill next to it is being rebuilt as a recycled containerboard and tissue plant, a £1 billion investment programme. South of the A494, Broughton is defined by aerospace wing manufacturing and by AMRC Cymru, the research centre that opened beside it in 2019. Engineering suppliers to both cluster in Queensferry, Sandycroft and Saltney, close to the A55 and the Chester border.

Newer employment land on the Sealand side of the enterprise zone, aimed at logistics and manufacturing occupiers.
What Deeside operators ask us to supply.
The order below reflects the enquiries we get from the Dee corridor: wide aisle pallet racking for the distribution sheds on the Industrial Park first, then shelving and partitions for the Broughton aerospace chain, then heavy steel and long stock handling around Shotton and Sandycroft.
Racking safety duties on a Deeside site with three shift patterns.
The law is the same on the Dee as anywhere else in Wales. Under PUWER 1998 your racking is work equipment, and HSE guidance HSG76 expects you to name an appointed person responsible for racking safety, keep a record of regular visual checks, and arrange an inspection at least every 12 months by a technically competent person, which in practice means a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector. What changes in Deeside is the way the sites run. Steel coating lines, a paper mill and aerospace suppliers often work continental or 24 hour patterns, so the appointed person on days rarely sees what the night shift reach truck did at 3am.
We suggest a short visual check at each shift handover on high traffic aisles, with damage reported on a simple form before the next shift loads the bay. Aerospace suppliers also face AS9100 style audits, where an auditor may ask for the racking inspection report alongside calibration records and the quarantine log. A dated SEMA report, red and amber items closed out with photographs, and a named appointed person give that auditor a clean answer.
Deeside's aerospace supply chain needs storage that protects tolerances.
Wing manufacturing at Broughton has shaped a supply chain across Deeside and into Chester and Wrexham: machine shops cutting aluminium and titanium brackets, surface treatment specialists, fastener distributors and tooling makers. AMRC Cymru, the £20 million research centre opened next to the wing plant in November 2019 and run by the University of Sheffield AMRC, works with these firms on digital and lower carbon manufacturing. By its own count it has engaged with more than 100 small businesses in Wales. That work tends to show up on the shop floor as smaller batches, more part numbers and tighter control of where each part sits.
For storage this means the racking question is rarely about pallet count. It is about keeping a finished part from touching another, holding first article and quarantine stock apart from released stock, and putting kits beside the machine or the bench that needs them. We plan shelving, partitions and line-side storage around your routing and your quality manual, and we leave room for the next contract to add part numbers.

Getting to Deeside from Seven Sisters.
Deeside is the far end of our patch. From Seven Sisters the usual route is north through mid Wales on the A483 by Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Welshpool, then the A483 past Wrexham to the A55 and A494 at Ewloe. It is around 140 miles and about three hours in normal traffic; the M4, M5, M54 and A5 route is longer in miles but sometimes quicker in winter. The A494 through Queensferry is a known pinch point at peak times, so we aim to arrive on site before 8am or after the morning rush.
Because of the distance we plan Deeside work in blocks. Surveys are booked within five working days and often paired with visits in Wrexham, Chester or Ellesmere Port, so we stay over and spend a full day on your site. Installation crews lodge locally for the length of the job. For plants that cannot stop production, we install and inspect during planned shutdowns, weekends or night shifts, agreed with you in advance.

A typical Deeside job: stores and tooling for a tier-two machine shop.
A typical enquiry from the Broughton and Queensferry side comes from a precision machining business that has won another aerospace work package and run out of space. Raw bar and plate sit on the floor, finished parts wait on trolleys, and fixtures are stacked wherever there is room. The job we usually propose combines cantilever racking for bar and long fixtures, heavy duty shelving for jigs, a meshed quarantine cage with a single controlled door, and labelled line-side shelving beside each CNC cell.
We survey the unit, map the routing from goods in to inspection and dispatch, and produce drawings and load notices for each bay. Installation is phased around machine maintenance windows so spindles keep running, and we hand over with the first inspection record and appointed person briefing already done. The linked case study shows a similar tool and jig store we completed in Swansea.

Standard racking and shelving delivered to Deeside
Bays, beams, shelving, protection and handling kit are in stock on the online store and delivered to Deeside. Designed systems still come through the free survey, because a layout has to be measured before it can be priced.

Questions from Deeside.
Yes. We start by reading your stores procedure and quarantine rules, then plan the install in zones so released, quarantined and customer owned stock never share an open area. On a typical Broughton or Queensferry machine shop we work one zone at a time over 2 to 5 days, move stock under your supervision, and label each new location to match your system before the next zone starts. You get drawings and load notices for the auditor's file at handover, so the change is documented rather than discovered at the next audit.
For standard adjustable pallet racking, allow 4 to 8 weeks from order to completion, depending on steel availability and the size of the scheme. The survey is booked within 5 working days, and drawings and a quotation usually follow within a week of that visit. A single shed on Zone 1 or Zone 2 with a few hundred pallet locations is often installed in under a week once the steel is on site. Pallet shuttle or very narrow aisle schemes take longer, typically 12 to 16 weeks for shuttle hardware.
Travel and accommodation are priced openly as a separate line on the quotation, not hidden in the steel. Deeside is about 140 miles and three hours from our base, so a survey is planned as a day on your site with an overnight stay, often shared with other North Wales and Cheshire visits to keep the cost down. For installations the crew lodges locally, which means full working days on site rather than long daily drives. Inspections can be grouped with neighbouring Deeside sites in the same week to spread the travel.
Coil racking with cradles is the usual answer. Each coil sits on its own saddle, which keeps painted, galvanised or pre-finished surfaces off the floor and away from other coils, and lets a fabricator draw a specific width or gauge without moving the stack. Cradle spacing, coil diameter and weights are taken from your own coil schedule. Where coil arrives on pallets or skids instead, heavy duty pallet racking with steel decks can work. We also look at how your crane or forklift approaches the bay, because that decides the layout.
Yes, and for a paper or steel site that is often the best time, because aisles are clear and trucks are parked. Tell us the shutdown dates 4 to 6 weeks ahead and we will book a SEMA Approved Rack Inspector for those days, including nights or weekends. A site of a few thousand pallet locations usually takes 1 to 2 days to inspect. You receive a written report with damage graded red, amber or green, and any red items are flagged to your appointed person on the day so they can be offloaded before production restarts.
Often it is. Many older units in Queensferry and Sandycroft have 6 to 8m to the haunch but only a single working level, so a mezzanine can roughly double usable floor area for packing, kitting or light assembly. We check column positions, the slab, fire escape distances and building regulations requirements at survey. Steelwork usually goes up in 1 to 3 weeks, and we can phase it so the ground floor keeps working. If the space is for storage only, raised shelving or longspan on two tiers may be a lower cost option.
Yes. Used and refurbished racking is common for start-ups and contract work on the Industrial Park, where a lease may only run a few years. Every used frame and beam is checked before it leaves us, and we only supply components we can identify by manufacturer so load data is reliable. Mixing makes within a run is avoided. We also buy back racking when a Deeside site closes or reconfigures, which can offset the cost of a new layout. Small parts and accessories are available from palletrackingwales.shop.
