Deep lane drive-in racking in a cold store

What we are announcing.

Pallet Racking Services Wales is now the Wales distributor for Spacemaker Systems semi-automated pallet shuttle technology. From today we supply, install and support both the two-way and four-way shuttle ranges for warehouses, cold stores and production sites across Wales.

A pallet shuttle is a battery powered unit that runs on rails inside a deep storage lane, carrying pallets in and out so the forklift stays at the lane face. It turns a high density block of racking into storage that can run first in, first out or last in, first out as a software setting, rather than a consequence of how the racking was built.

Why it matters for Welsh warehouses.

Many of the sites we survey hold a small number of products in large quantities: food and drink, dairy, packaging, building products. Those operations suit deep lane storage, but conventional drive-in racking forces every truck into the lane and fixes the rotation. The shuttle removes both problems.

Cold storage is the strongest case. The two-way heavy duty unit is rated from minus 40C to plus 50C with sealed components, so it works in blast freezers where trucks entering lanes cause the most damage and lose the most energy. Fewer, deeper lanes mean less volume to refrigerate.

  • Two-way shuttles: retrofit into compatible existing racking where the rail profile and structure allow, no warehouse execution system needed.
  • Four-way shuttles: whole-block automation with lifts and cross travel lanes, designed into new racking.
  • Retrofit replacement: worn or obsolete shuttles swapped for current units on compatible rails.

What happens next.

Every shuttle project starts with a storage study and throughput analysis, so the configuration is proved against your pallets per SKU and movements per hour before you see a price. If a shuttle does not pay for your stock profile, we will say so and quote the racking that does.

Existing shuttle users can also ask us to check their rails. Where the rail profile is compatible, current units can replace worn or obsolete shuttles without replacing the racking, which is often the cheapest route to modern control software and fleet management.

Read the full specification on the pallet shuttle systems page, or compare shuttles with static options in the racking system comparison.

This is a dated announcement. For reference material kept up to date, see the guides. Other news: Annual inspection bookings now open for 2027 · New online store: palletrackingwales.shop.

Send us your pallets per SKU and your throughput target.

Those two numbers decide whether a shuttle pays. If it does not, we will say so on the call and quote the racking that does.
