The challenge.

  • Fast moving lines were picked from static shelving, so pickers walked the length of the aisle and replenishment interrupted picking.
  • Stock rotation depended on pickers remembering to take the oldest carton first.

The constraints.

  • Picking runs through the day, so installation had to happen overnight.
  • Carton sizes vary by line, so lane widths had to be configurable.

What we specified, and why.

Each line of the specification answers one part of the problem. Here is the reasoning, line by line.

Carton live storage with inclined roller tracks
Cartons are loaded at the rear and roll to the pick face, separating replenishment from picking and giving first in, first out automatically.
Ergonomic pick heights
Fast lines sit at waist to shoulder height, slower lines above and below.

Installation.

  • Installed over two nights with the old shelving removed one bay at a time.
  • Lane widths were set to the carton sizes captured at survey.

The outcome.

  • Pickers work one short face rather than walking the aisle.
  • Replenishment no longer crosses the pick path.
Pick walks dropped straight away and the oldest stock always comes out first now.
